When it comes to beautiful Tenerife, what springs to mind? Lazy sunny days on a beach or by the pool? Partying ’til dawn in Playa de las Americas, or shooting down water slides in Siam Park? One thing’s for sure, there are plenty of things to see and do in this sun-baked Canary Island – and more than a few new experiences on offer to keep you coming back year after year.

So where do we begin?

For starters, holidays to Tenerife are not complete without visiting its stunning national park! A sprawling expanse of natural beauty, Teide National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a vast open space that is one of the oldest (and most visited) national parks in Spain, having been officially titled in 1954. It’s home to the soaring Mt Teide, a dormant volcano and the highest summit in Spain, which rises to a lofty 3,718 metres. Visitors can whizz to the top by cable car and, on a clear day, enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding volcanic landscape, the island and the Atlantic Ocean.

For something a little different, head to the capital city of Santa Cruz. It’s home to plenty of museums, galleries, restaurants, historic sights and great hotels, along with its fair share of retail outlets. The main shopping area is Calle Castillo, which features high street shops as well as a number of independent stores. On your way around, look out for sculptures contributed by artists for the 1973 International Street Sculpture Exhibition, and which now form an arts trail across the city.

Of course, if you’re in the city in February, you might catch the world-famous Carnival. This international spectacle attracts thousands of spectators every year and is a dazzling affair that is said to be second in stature only to Rio (the two cities are now twinned).

Whether you’re into wide open spaces, retail therapy or the dazzle and shine of a world-famous carnival, this fabulous corner of the Canary Islands is full of incredible things to see and do. When will you experience Tenerife?
