  • 5 Amazing Destinations for Vegetarians

Are you a travelling veggie? With many countries following a traditional, non-vegetarian lifestyle complete with lots of meat and seafood, it can sometimes be tricky for vegetarians to find delicious cuisine that both meets their dietary requirements and also allows them to sample some of the local dishes.

Depending on how strict you are with your diet also affects the ease of finding great food. For example, seemingly meat-free dishes may contain meat stock or fish sauce. Being vegan is even tougher.

(Don’t forgot to check out our Vegan Travel section) 🙂

To enjoy great food with less worry, here are some excellent destinations around the world for vegetarians:

    Chennai, India

It would be quite appropriate to describe India’s Chenna as the land that gave birth to veganism. Finding tasty veggie fare here is a dream, with many of the locals following pretty rigid vegan diets. Located in South India, the buzzing, metropolitan city dishes up a sumptuous array of delights designed to please. A wide variety of rice dishes will satisfy your appetite and you can enjoy them with varying levels of spiciness. Flavourful chutneys, tasty dosas, and wada are also popular. Chennai is also known for its coffee. Indeed, with almost half of the entire population following a veg or vegan way of life, India in general is often a terrific country for vegetarians.

    Glasgow, Scotland

Glasgow was named the best UK destination for vegans by PETA, and the city has seen an amazing growth in the number of vegetarian restaurants over the past few years. If you thought Scotland was all about haggis, think again! Tight EU food labelling requirements also make it easy to see exactly what you are buying in the stores – look for the green “V” symbol and you know your food is safe.

    London, England

Another great UK city for veggies, London is home to an incredible selection of dedicated vegetarian and vegan eateries. Most restaurants and pubs that don’t deal in exclusively veggie fare have at least a few veggie-friendly options on the menu. The big Indian influence on cuisine means that veg-curries are always a great bet. You can also sink your teeth into a tasty meat-free pie, enjoyed with fresh vegetables, salad, or baked beans and accompanied by chips or mash for a taste of traditional English grub.

    Portland, USA

One of the liveliest cities of the US, Portland is also one of the country’s top destinations for vegetarians. Check out some of the cool food festivals throughout the year for inspiration!

    Rome, Italy

The land of pizza, pasta, and gnocchi, many people may be surprised to hear that Italy is a leading choice for vegetarians. But it is pretty easy to take all the wonderful flavours of the Med and create a satisfying meatless dish. As cheese is generally on top of a finished meal, and olive oil is commonly used in cooking, vegans needn’t miss out on certain dishes either – just ask for no cheese! The country has one of the largest numbers of vegetarians in the whole of the EU.

    Singapore City, Singapore

With a mixed population and various ethnic groups calling this small country home, it is little wonder that many food traditions abound. Indian food is ever-present, which means great options for veggies. Fare from other countries and cultures is often available in a veggie-friendly version in Singapore, with hundreds of vegetarian and health-food restaurants to cater to the ever-growing meat-free eaters. From rice and noodle dishes to Western favourites, Singapore knows how to provide a terrific veggie feed!

Other countries where veggie cuisine is well-available and the idea of vegetarianism is pretty clearly understood include Canada, Nepal, Jamaica, Ethiopia, Sweden, and Taiwan. Pescatarians (people who do not eat meat or poultry but will eat fish and seafood products) can generally eat well in coastal cities and on islands.

Nestling on the Laona Plateau in the Paphos region of western Cyprus is Miliou, one of the island’s smallest yet most beautiful islands, set among vineyards, citrus groves and almond trees. It’s unspoilt countryside and stunning mountain vistas make it a most delightful rural setting.

A trip through the village gives a glimpse of rural Cypriot life, where traditional looms are used to make cloth and the whole community centres around the local coffee shop.

A walk on the wild side

    Landscape

If you like to ramble through the countryside, Miliou has a spectacular show of blooming flowers during the springtime when the village is surrounded by the aroma of the surrounding pines and lemon groves.

The village is also a popular nesting site for nightingales and an ideal spot for bird watchers, particularly in spring and autumn when the main bird migrations take place.

    Relax and unwind

    Wreck on sunset

The area is also supplied with an abundance of natural spring waters, and adjacent to the springs is the site of the ancient Ayii Anargyri monastery. Built in 1649, it’s believed to be one of the oldest on the island and the site is now home to a natural healing spa resort.

The Ayii Anargyri spa has a boutique hotel with room for 150 guests – that’s more than the entire population of Miliou – a swimming pool and luxury spa that makes the most of the region’s mineral rich waters. All this makes it the perfect place to get away for some rest, relaxation and rejuvenation.

    A taste of Cyprus

    Organic Farming, Kampia Cyprus

If you really want to get a taste of authentic Cypriot cuisine, Miliou has some fantastic taverns and restaurants that offer some of the island’s best traditional dishes all made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Pangratios restaurant is a perfectly rustic, family-run taverna situated in the town square that serves up possibly the best Cypriot meze you’ll ever taste. The comfortable and romantic setting also makes it the perfect spot for a quiet glass of wine or two.

If it’s a good but inexpensive evening out you’re after, Petroula Christodoulou offers a range of local delicacies, including mouth-watering fish dishes and vegetarian platters.

Just outside the village is Aphrodite’s Rock Brewery, serving up some fantastic dishes to perfectly complement the freshly-brewed ale and hand-pulled cider – and make sure you try the tasting paddle.

    Action and adventure

    Pony Trekking

If you fancy some adventure, take a short trip away from the village for horse riding, buggying and quad biking through the scenic countryside.

Eagle Mountain Ranch is located about eight miles from the Ayii Anargyri spa resort and is a family-run riding school that caters for every level of rider – the sunset ride and picnic is an absolute must.

Take the extreme quad safari from Coral Bay for an all-day round trip of some of the island’s most beautiful and historic landmarks with enough twists and turns to keep even the most experienced rider happy.

Even a trip to this tiniest of rural villages can open your eyes to a world of Cypriot culture, cuisine and adventure. What are you waiting for?

  • Preparing for a European Interrail Adventure!

Preparing for a European Interrail Adventure!

What better way to explore Europe than from the comfort of a train cabin – Watching the countryside fly by, getting lost in a good book and enjoying good company while whizzing to your next destination!

If this sounds good – Then the Interrail should be high on your bucket list!

The Interrail is simply an unlimited pass for trains journeys around Europe. No limit. Hop on and hop off! Want to travel from France to the Netherlands?! No dramas!

The Interrail website is packed with helpful advice and tips. From information about planning, buying your tickets, booking taxis and sightseeing when you arrive.

Here are some of our essential tips for Preparing for a European Interrail Adventure!

    1. Head over to Seat 61

    Train Names Sunset

If you haven’t heard of Seat 61 – it’s probably the most in-depth train travel resources out there. Curated by train geek and travel guru Mark Smith, it’s been our go-to for years for all things train. Even when we travelled through Mongolia and China, it was packed with helpful pointers, timetables and must-see places. Highly recommended!

    Read more: http://www.seat61.com/InterRail-pass-guide.htm

    2. Grab an European Health Insurance Card

The EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) is a UK resident specific service from the NHS that allows you to receive free or low-cost treatment or services while visiting European member states.

The EHIC is valid across the majority of Europe:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

So UK nationals – Grab your card before you head abroad. Too good not to miss!

Note: The EHIC card might not cover all your medical costs, your flight home, lost property etc.

That’s a job for some adequate Travel Insurance.

    3. Pack light!

    lonely traveller

This is applies to most travel scenarios, but packing light is essential on the Interrail. The last thing you’ll want to do is wheel a massive suitcase up and down multiple carriages, annoying your fellow passengers and getting hot and bothered.

Just bring the essentials. You can buy everything when you get to your destination, probably for a better price!

    Our Interrail essentials:

    • Kindle! The new Kindle is amazing! We love ours. It has it’s own backlight and wifi… Say no more! This will save sooo much room in your bags if you’re a heavy reader!
    • Travel towels. These are great space savers! They dry super quickly…if you need to leave your room in a hurry, just wrap it around your bag and it’ll be dry in no time. A large one like this, or and extra-large one like this microfibre beach towel ticks all boxes!
    • Padlocks! Bring a few as you’ll probably lose the keys like we have a million times. We’re not really a fan of combination locks like this, as they can be quite easy to guess and hack. These padlocks come in a 4 pack and are very affordable for securing a hostel locker.

Pro tip! Secure your bags together with some thin security cable to stop someone running off with your goodies while you’re snoozing…

    4. Hook yourself up with a YHA Card

    Backpackers

The YHA card is the budget backpackers best friend! With YHA hostels all around the globe, it’s a great item to have in your wallet. Prices vary from country to country, but as of Sept 2015, an annual membership for under 26’s is ÂŁ5, and ÂŁ15 for those over 26.

There are too many benefits to mention here, but there are loads in addition to money off room rates!

What did we miss? Can you think of any Interrail essentials?!
