  • Have an Adventure and Go Cycling around the Netherlands

    Cycling

The Netherlands, also sometimes known as Holland, is a terrific place to explore by bicycle. A preferred means of transport with many of the locals, it is a cyclists dream. Flat terrain couples with well-maintained and well-signposted cycle routes, along with a healthy respect for people biking along the roads makes it easy to get around on two wheels.

There are many things to see and do in the Netherlands, and, for active souls, cycling can be a prime way of getting around the country from A to B. Save money on transportation and see more when you use peddle power!

There are designated cycle paths next to many of the country’s major roads, making it safe and convenient. The large network covers most of the country. Pick up a copy of the Sterkste Fietskaart Van Nederland for a good overview of the cycle routes in the Netherlands. Laminated so as to be suitable for wet weather conditions, two maps cover the whole of the country, with one for the north and one for the south. You can also get more detailed maps for the different regions.

Want to cover longer distances but don’t have so much time? Use the Dutch railways in conjunction with your bike. Not ony can you take your bike on the train with you, but many stations also offer bike rentals and storage facilities too!

Feeling active and raring to explore the Netherlands by bike? Here are four great routes and places to tick off your bike-loving list:

    Amsterdam Forest

    Cyclist

With various pathways that are dedicated to walkers, cyclists, or horse riders, everyone can enjoy their own space in Amsterdam Forest. Known in the local language as Amsterdamse Bos, it is a top spot for biking enthusiasts. Head along open expanses, into dense woods, and along grassy paths to have fun and explore. Many locals bring their kids here to build their confidence when they are starting to learn how to ride a bike.

    Zeeland

The province of Zeeland is the country’s most south-westerly province. It is where the Rivers Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt run into the sea. The stretching coastline has cycle paths that lead past picturesque outlooks and through pretty and interesting town. The flatness of the Dutch landscapes is really quite beautiful, and you can explore places like Oostkapelle, Cadzand, and Westkapelle as you ride along.

    North Sea

     North Sea

The smooth and well-maintained LF1 bike route runs along the North Sea coastline for almost 300 kilometres, providing plenty for you to look at. The paved cycle paths lead over the undulating sand dunes, over small hills, and alongside the sea. Although none of the hills are all that large you will discover that not everywhere in the Netherlands is flat!

    Groningen

A super bike-friendly city in the north of the nation, Groningen lets you cycle around with ease as you uncover its many delights. Explore the city’s medieval past and enjoy the largely car-free paths. Some highlights of the youthful city include the gothic church of Martinitoren, learning more about the city at the Groninger Museum, admiring the impressive Town Hall, shopping in the Grotte Markt, and seeing the historic synagogue.

This is just a wee taster of the places you can enjoy by bicycle in the Netherlands. Get your helmets at the ready and cycle around the Netherlands for heaps of active fun!

  • Is Amsterdam The Ultimate European Party Destination?

    Red Light District

One of Europe’s best-loved places for a good weekend (or longer!) of fun, very few places can hold a candle to Amsterdam when it comes to having a good time. Of course, numerous other places also offer lots of fun and frolics, for example the Czech Republic’s Prague, the Spanish islands of Ibiza and Tenerife, the UK’s Liverpool, loads of places across the Greek Islands, and Portugal’s Lagos. Whilst there certainly are places that have bigger and better clubs, with all the top name and up and coming DJs, and places where you can party on heavenly sandy beaches, Amsterdam has a great all round approach.

These are some reasons that make Amsterdam a top party choice:

    Amsterdam’s Clubs

    vip

Whilst the Dutch typically prefer a more laid-back and relaxed scene, there are still plenty of night clubs and discos where you can don your glad rags for a night of dancing and painting the town red. There’s music to please everyone, so whether you’re into dance, pop, trance, techno, electronic, RnB, dub step, hip hop, and more, you’ll be sure to find lots of places to keep you happy! A lively atmosphere and a fun-loving crowd make the Amsterdam clubbing scene super cool. Some of the clubs are housed within funky old buildings, and it’s quite possible you may find yourself raving away in a former art gallery or theatre! Check here for some of Amsterdam’s best clubs.

    Coffee Shops

    'Coffeeshop Abraxas Too' Spuistraat Amsterdam

Amsterdam’s Coffee Shops cafes are super chilled out and really friendly and welcoming. They are perhaps a little bit different to those that you are used to back at home – a major appeal of the cafes is that many sell cannabis products alongside the regular array of drinks and snacks. Open from early in the morning until late at night, the cafes are the ideal place if you’re after a cheeky toke.

Many people recommend the space cakes and cookies too. Some places also sell a wide range of cannabis paraphernalia, and you’ll also find some shops that offer the same goodies. If you’re looking to buy some quality stuff head to Zamnesia – pick up weed, seeds, grinders, mushrooms, and other related items in this uber liberal city. Stay the right side of the law and enjoy some legal highs!

    The Red Light District

If you’re after some late night adult fun, Amsterdam’s Red Light District is one of the best such places in Europe. Prostitution is legal in Amsterdam, so you can enjoy some raunchy fun without fearing the long arm of the law. There are numerous different ways to enjoy the Red Light District, and if you’re not interested in actually having sex it’s still a pretty awesome place to see; just wandering around and having a look is the main activity, although there is also a large amount of adult action too.

There are brothels, strip clubs, a variety of live shows, sex shops, fascinating themed museums, bars, and cafes. It is certainly an eye-opening experience and it draws people from all walks of life intrigued by the notorious and infamous Amsterdam Red Light District.

6 Cultural (and cheap) Things to do in Amsterdam

Beautiful Amsterdam. The capital and largest city in the Netherlands, and arguably the Cultural Capital of Europe.

Amsterdam is high on most travellers must see destinations. With it’s rich mix of history and cultural attractions, countless museums and galleries, as well as world-beating night life and lively restaurant and café scene. Amsterdam is one of the world’s most popular cites to visit.

Unfortunately with the current high price of the Euro, Amsterdam is quite an expensive destination for most travellers. So we’ve listed 6 Cultural, and cheap things to do during your visit to Amsterdam!

    1. Visit the Van Gogh museum on a Friday night

Avoid the masses and visit the Van Gogh Museum on a Friday evening. Open much later on a Friday, a small bar area and seats are set up on the ground floor, while music plays up through the floors from the bar below. You can take a glass of wine or beer around with you while you admire the art work on display, which you can’t do normally. Any excuse…

    2. Visit the Anne Frank Museum

Although a bit harrowing, the Anne Frank Museum is definitely worth a visit during a trip to Amsterdam.

The house Anne and her family lived in during the Nazi occupation has been tastefully preserved and converted into a museum. The museum is dedicated to her life and prolonged isolation she went through during the invasion.

Queues can be quite big to visit the musuem, so book online in advance.

    3. Hire bicycles

Bicycles and Amsterdam go hand-in-hand! There must be hundreds of thousands of them around the city. Amsterdam (and the rest of Holland!) is flat, making exploring the city by bicycle easy. The road system is bike friendly too, with dedicated bike lanes throughout the city.

    4. Picnic in Vondel park

Beautiful Vondel Park is Amsterdam’s favourite sunny afternoon hangout! Clean, spacious and large enough to find plenty of privacy. It’s the perfect place to take some bread and cheese, enjoy the gardens and relax. Maybe with a cheeky Heineken or two!

    5. Explore the canals

Amsterdam has a vast canal system running through the city. Houseboats and barges decorate the canals. You can spend hours walking and enjoying life by the water. Admire the little hump bridges and stop at waterside bars and cafés along the way.

    6. Walk Around a Flower Market

Tulips anyone? Dutch flower markets are world famous. A leisurely stoll around one of the markets is a wonderful way to people watch and admire the arrangements on show.

Tentative bonus number 7. Explore the famous Red Light District

While obviously seedy, the famous Red Light District is totally safe to explore and to see what all the fuss is about. The iconic red light windows line a few of Amsterdam’s streets in the heart of the city. Best seen at night for maximum effect!

Those who do enjoy a smoke now and again, unfortunately cannibis laws have changed now meaning toking tourists can no longer visit the infamous ‘coffee shops‘. People wishing to partake in a puff need a permit/licence, and must be Dutch! Boo!
